In the extreme, Martian-like conditions of the Omani desert a team of pioneering men and women from 25 countries are paving the way for future manned missions to Mars. As they prepare for the Red Planet ic! berlin is there to shield their eyes from everything Earth’s atmosphere can throw at them.

For four weeks in February a small field crew will study equipment, procedures and techniques to detect life on Mars. During the simulations the analog astronauts from the OeWF will test the prototype spacesuit Aouda. At 45 kilograms this ‘wearable spacecraft’ is designed to protect humans against the hostile Martian landscape: dust storms with wind speeds of 200kp/h; galactic cosmic rays of radiation; temperatures below –100°C. For ocular protection against the harsh desert sun on Earth the choice was clear: feather-light sunglasses from ic! berlin.

As pioneers of the eyewear industry ic! berlin knows all about breaking new ground and exploring new territories. Our screwless sunglasses redefined what eyewear could be over twenty years ago. Today, our new collection of rubberised sunglasses and glasses are the perfect choice to with stand the harsh conditions of the Omani desert. The next step is to see how they fare on Mars.
